After reminding us that this is our job, Spurgeon goes on to discuss the topic that he believes is the most important to relay to our children. “Would that parents would awaken to a sense of the importance of this matter. It is a pleasant duty to talk of Jesus to our sons and daughters.” To talk of Jesus to our sons and daughters. What an awesome privleidge and obligation. Not math, not history, not science, not apologetics, but Jesus.
That’s it. That’s the answer. That is the bullseye. While we set high academic goals lets not forget the biggest and best lesson.
Dads, we have one teaching job: the Gospel. Might I make one more suggestion. As you prepare to teach it to your kids, remind yourselves daily of the same good news. How great to remind ourselves daily that Christ is the source of our security and the He has our back and is ready for us when we fail. How refreshing to shift our hope back off of ourselves and onto Jesus. It’s never been about what you do, it’s always been about what Jesus has done. Let’s make much of Him to ourselves and our children.
